your
ROUTE MAP
to
SUCCESS
By Maggie Love
Pitman Training London EC2
Success
means very different things to different people. So the definition
is yours and so is the control – you choose whether you are a winner
or a loser! And this is a great time to be planning your strategy
for next year’s success. Don’t let yourself be defined by others’
views or their plans for you – that’s the way to long-term
disillusionment and dissatisfaction. Set your compass for own
future, work out what makes you feel good about your job, your life
and your achievements and plan your own route map. There are several
sayings about planning and maybe the most pertinent it that ‘failing
to plan, is planning to fail’. It’s a fair concept but before
you plan you need a good pinch of self-awareness.
-
First of all work
out what makes you feel successful:
-
Material things – a
new house, car, flash holidays?
-
Recognition or
advancement – awards, achievements, promotion?
-
Physical
achievements – running a marathon, climbing Everest or a bungee
jump?
-
Doing something new
– a language, new skills, writing a book?
-
Service to others –
putting something back to the community?

Set yourself the goal:
No matter how ambitious
commit your key objectives and target goals to paper. Write it on
card and carry it with you – look at it every day. -
Work backwards:
Plan each step working
back from your goal. You wont get there in a single leap, so make
sure you break your main goal into critical smaller steps. -
Take a reality check:
Don’t be put off by
criticism or cries of disbelief from others. Do dig deep however to
make sure you understand how much effort, time and if necessary pain
this is going to take. -
Be brutally frank:
Especially with yourself
– you may want to reach the goal but do you have the staying power,
drive and determination to see it through. -
Build on your strengths:
Work out what you are
good at and get GREAT at it. Being great at something overcomes a
lot of negatives! -
Know your weakest
points:
Conversely understand
your weak points. Listen to positive criticism, get trained, get
better or get someone else to do it! -
Monthly reviews:
Look at your plan,
update, amend and reassess every month without fail. If it’s not
working change tactics, do not stick with a losing plan. -
Seek out achievers:
Find people who’ve
achieved their goals. Ask how they did it. Read, and research.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – use their tips in your
own style. -
Take accountability
Admit mistakes, be
honest with yourself, look at where it went wrong and don’t repeat
it – never blame others. -
Celebrate successes:
Set realistic milestones and reward
yourself when you hit them. Enjoy and visualise how you will feel
when you meet the big goal.
